Newcastle United have topped a table of Premier League clubs constructed by the Campaign for Better Transport measuring how well grounds are served by public transport.

The Magpies secured their status as transport champions with initiatives including season-long matchday public transport for just £10.   There is also a Metro station at St.James’s Park.  The team that came second, Arsenal, has a number of underground stations in the vicinity.  Indeed, the station for Highbury had its name changed from Gillespie Road to Arsenal at the behest of the club.   Fulham came third: fans can enjoy a riverside walk through a park from the nearest underground station.

Since the move to the Emirates the percentage of Arsenal fans arriving by car has fallen from 35 per cent to 10 per cent.  On average, 43 per cent of fans travel to home matches by car and 35 per cent use trains for at least part of the journey.

Manchester United, which has a travel plan that is a decade out of date, is in the relegation zone along with Queen’s Park Rangers which doesn’t make the most of the public transport links available. Reading has the least accessible ground of all with the Madejski Stadium situated miles out of town surrounded by motorways with almost no public transport except on match days.
