Most embarrassing shirt sponsors ever?

In the wake of Wonga’s sponsorship of Newcastle United, the Daily Mirror has produced a list of the 10 most embarrassing shirt sponsors ever.   Most of the embarrassment seems to relate to rather unfortunate names as distinct from the product or service itself.

In the wake of Wonga’s sponsorship of Newcastle United, the Daily Mirror has produced a list of the 10 most embarrassing shirt sponsors ever.   Most of the embarrassment seems to relate to rather unfortunate names as distinct from the product or service itself.

One positive result of the Wonga sponsorship is that the new Sports Direct Arena name for Newcastle’s ground will be dropped and there will be a reversion to St. James’s Park which everyone apart from the club itself was using anyway.

It is believed that the new deal is worth £8m over four years, a substantial sum, although short of what clubs like Manchester United can command.

A further complication is that the Muslim Council of Great Britain has advised Newcastle’s Muslim players not to wear the shirt as it would infringe Sharia law given the involvement of Wonga in what they regard as usury.
