The club was founded in 1948 as Atlético Malagueño, changing to Málaga CF in 1994 after taking over the mantle, and inheriting the fanbase, of Club Deportivo Málaga, that had gone bankrupt. In 2006 Lorenzo Sanz, a former Real Madrid president, purchased a 97 per cent holding in the club and then appointed his son Fernando Sanz, the former captain of the team, as club president.
