The club was founded in 1943 as Ferranti Thistle, a works team. The club was admitted to the Scottish Football League in 1974. However, due to stringent SFL rules on overt sponsorship of teams at the time, they were forced to change their name in order to take their place in the league. After a campaign by the Edinburgh Evening News to find a name for the club, the name Meadowbank Thistle was chosen, and approved by the SFL in time for the new season, playing home matches at Meadowbank Stadium in Edinburgh. In 1995, the club was relocated to Livingston, renamed after that town and in 2004 won Scottish League Cup. They play at the Avondale Stadium.
