"If you want some accessible but informative insight into football then I suggest you couldn't do better than the Political Economy of Football website, which is not only intelligible but comes with the added bonus of being written by Addicks fan Wyn Grant."

Internet giants may bid for Premier League matches

There is a growing expectation that Amazon, Facebook, Google and Twitter could enter the race for the next round of Premier League television rights which will be open to tender towards the end of the year.

Sky's ability to lift prices may be limited while BT investors might be concerned if its investment continued to grow.   Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore has talked about more than two broadcasters showing live matches, but that may simply be an attempt to encourage bidders.   It is expected that the way in which matches are packaged may be changed to encourage new entrants.
