Indian Premier League fails

The ambitious plan for an Indian Premier League featuring semi-retired world stars has been postponed for a second time and now looks unlikely to go ahead.   The league was modelled on cricket’s India Premier League and the matches were due to be played in West Bengal between March and May.

The All-India Football Federation refused to allow refused to allow Indian players from the official domestic I-league to join, saying that it was essentially a state-level tournament.  There is also a lack of good quality pitches given that the state government has been relucant to release grounds owned by it unless the source of funding for the tournament was made clear.


The news will be a blow to efforts to given football a stronger following and base in India.
