The club was founded in June 1904 and usually plied their trade in the lower leagues until season 2008/09 when they entered the top-tier of the Football League (The Premier league) for the first ever time following play-off success in May 2008. Their ascent from the bottom division of the English football league to the top in just five seasons is the third-fastest ever.

The club nows play home games at the KC Stadium (capacity: 25,404) having moved from Boothferry Park in 2002.
