"If you want some accessible but informative insight into football then I suggest you couldn't do better than the Political Economy of Football website, which is not only intelligible but comes with the added bonus of being written by Addicks fan Wyn Grant."

How local is a team's support?

Perhaps not surprisingly, a YouGov analysis of the profiles of over 37,000 football fans has found that Liverpool and Manchester United have the least local support of any Premiership teams.   However, it is surprising that only 29 per cent of their support came from the whole of the north-west.

The most local teams are Swansea City and Stoke City with 76 per cent and 74 per cent of their support coming from Wales and the West Midlands respectively.   In London the team with the most local support base is Crystal Palace.
