Futbol Club Barcelona, or just 'Barça' to its fans, is based at the Camp Nou - capacity 98,000. Founded in 1899 by a group of Swiss, English, and Catalan men led by Joan Gamper, the club has now become a Catalan institution. Founding members of La Liga in 1928 they have never been relegated from the Primera. As of September 2006, the number of socis (club members / owners) was 151,127, while in June 2006 the number of penyes (officially-registered supporter clubs) worldwide was 1,782. The club also operates other professional sports teams: AXA-Winterthur FCB (basketball), FC Barcelona-Cifec (handball) and FC Barcelona Futsal. There are also a number of prominent amateur sports teams that compete at rugby union (FCB Rugby), women's basketball, women's football, wheelchair basketball, ice hockey, athletics, baseball, cycling, field hockey, figure skating, and volleyball.

Financial Overview

1999/00 season turnover equalled €118.8 million. Based on income figures for the 2005-06 season FC Barcelona was the 2nd largest club in the world with a revenue of €259 million, this achievement being helped by the estimated €31.5m the club made in total revenue from winning the Champions League vai match, television and winning bonus income. In January 2007 the club released half year financial results which showed the club generated turnover of 144.5 million euros versus expenditure of 135.4 million euros. In total, showing a profit of 9.1 million euros.Financial results for the 2015/16 season showed record revenues of €679million, with a net profit of €29million after tax.
