Concern about the club’s high wage spend was one of the factors leading the QPR board to replace Mark Hughes by Harry Redknapp.   Following heavy spending on salaries in the summer, the club’s wages to turnover ratio is understood to be 155 per cent, way above the recommended level.

There would be a substantial drop in revenue if the club was relegated.    QPR earnmed £43m from broadcasting rights last season but that would drop by about £25m in the second tier after parachute payments are taken into account.   Premier League clubs are also set to receive at least £15m extra in television income from revenue next season, making survival even more important.

Some on the board have questioned the expensive contracts given to players since Hughes took charge in January.  Hughes had 18 months left on his £3m a year contract which will continue to be paid.
