Chesterfield Stadium Plan Hits Snags

Relocation plans for Chesterfield could fall through unless Blues’ bosses can secure multi-million pound investment into the new ground. The 10,000 seater £12m stadium is part of developer Wilson Bowden’s proposed regeneration scheme to include a Tesco store and mixed-use commercial use at the former Demaglass works. But debt-troubled Blues have still not struck a deal with an investor and the overall scheme depends on the stadium going ahead.

But debt-troubled Blues have still not struck a deal with an investor and the overall scheme depends on the stadium going ahead. Alan Walters, Chesterfields’ finance director, said that the club alone did not have the finances and, although talks were underway with three potential investors, no one had yet signed on the dotted line. The club’s 2006/7 accounts showed a deficit of £705,000, but Mr Walters said the annual accounts and balance sheets showed solvency. A spokesman for Tesco commented, ‘This is a Tesco, Chesterfield FC and mixed use site. Individually, none makes sense but all three become viable together. They’re inter-related.’
