"If you want some accessible but informative insight into football then I suggest you couldn't do better than the Political Economy of Football website, which is not only intelligible but comes with the added bonus of being written by Addicks fan Wyn Grant."

Charlton to become Belgian owned club?

It is being reported by Belgian Television that Charlton Athletic are to be acquired by the owner of Standard Liege, Roland Duchatelet, who made his fortune in microelectronics. He was estimated to be worth €500m in 2011. He acquired Standard Liege for £35m in 2011, but was initially controversial with fans, although they now top the Belgian Pro League.

A statement on Charlton's website reads: 'The club are happy to confirm that negotiations are taking place for Roland Duchâtelet to take over Charlton Athletic Football Club. Chairman Michel Slater has confirmed that: "Very constructive discussions are ongoing which we hope to conclude soon.” A further announcement will be made in due course.'

Sources are indicating that more than one deal may be on the table, but cash flow challenges may help to focus minds.

It is being reported, but has not been verified, that the Addicks have been sold for a bargain basement £14m with the mystery ultimate owner no longer prepared to fund the South-East London club.

Duchatelet is a larger than life character who founded his own political party to reflect his progressive liberal views. He is a member of the Belgian Senate.

Surely it is time to stop referring to political opinions rooted in the 1960s as "progressive"? Old, stale, and discredited would be more accurate.
