Ben Foster’s Old Club May Fail

The club that produced Manchester United and occasional England goalkeeper may disappear. Midland Alliance side Racing Club Warwick has called in the administrators. Warwick District Council, which owns the ground situated next to Warwick Racecourse, and Warwick Town Council have stepped in to ensure that the club can meet its remaining fixtures this season. The club owes about £68,000 to the tax authorities and other creditors. Regular repayments have been made for years, but the money now appears to have run out.

Manager Mark Fenemore has had to make do on a budget of £200 a week which meant that 17 players, the manager, a coach and a physio were on £10 a week. However, they haven’t been paid for four weeks and the manager has had to dip into his own pocket for the last two weeks, money he is unlikely to see again.

The club made a windfall gain from the sale of former Café Rouge employee Foster, initially to Stoke City and then from a sell on clause when he went to Old Trafford. Social inclusion money enabled the club to buy a fleet of ‘Racing To Get You There’ minibuses. However, profits from the bar, which were used to subsidise the football team, have been on a downward spiral for five or six years. Attendances have also fallen, partly because of relegation from the Southern League, but also because of the revival and success of Leamington in the neighbouring town. A possible white knight is at hand in the form of leisure company White Pearl Associates. It is a company asociated with Leisure Leagues which describes itself as the largest provider of five- and six-a-side leagues in Europe. Its registered office is in Warwick.
