55-0 defeat

The record for the worst result in British football which has stood since the 19th century has been broken after Illogan defeated Madron 55-0 in a match in the top division of the Mining League which is a feeder league to the Cornish Combination.  Apparently, Madron turned up with seven players and no recognised keeper.  Quite how they keep their reserve team going is unclear.

My co-presenter on the Radio Scilly sports show, Merryn Smith, was once keeper at Madron but he now plays in the two club Isles of Scilly league which was itself criticised for ‘low quality’ in the Non-League Paper today.   At least the Garrison Field on the Isles of Scilly has been graced by David Beckham and other top players.

There is no financial dimension to this but it does remind us that there is a world that is a long way away from Premiership football.   Players in the Isles of Scilly league are a literal example of ‘can we play you every week?’ but they still enjoy their football as they are buffeted by winds off the Atlantic.
