21 clubs barred in Italy on financial grounds

The Italian football federation has taken the drastic step of banning 21 clubs from its competitions next season because of the precarious state of their balance sheets.   Serie B club Ancona has been barred, along with 20 clubs from the Legia Pro.

Serie A and Serie B clubs were not at the meeting as they have been upset by a late decision by the football authorities to allow them to take on only one non-EU player instead of two for the coming season.   Because of a number of disagreements over rule changes, the footballers' union is threatening to begin the season with a strike.
