"If you want some accessible but informative insight into football then I suggest you couldn't do better than the Political Economy of Football website, which is not only intelligible but comes with the added bonus of being written by Addicks fan Wyn Grant."

Chester City FC For Sale For £1

Owner Stephen Vaughan has put Conference club Chester City for sale for £1 providing that the purchaser settles all outstanding debts. The club got a stay of execution in the High Court last week and have until March 10 to settle a £26,000 debt to HM Revenue and Customs. Meanwhile, an official fans' boycott has got under way.

The club was founded in 1912 as Abbey United, turning professional in 1949 and changing its name to Cambridge United in 1951. It was elected to the Football League proper in 1970, replacing Bradford Park Avenue. Home games are played at the Abbey Stadium which has a capacity of 9,617.

Turnover and pre-tax profit figures are in millions.

Rescue at Weymouth - More Trouble at Chester

Blue Square South side Weymouth FC have been saved by the brink of liquidation by a consortium led by Chris Ryan.  Until the consortium offer it had looked as if it was really the end of the road for the Terras who are around £700,000 in the red.  But with Ryan's consortium promising to inject more than £160,000 into the club and entering talks with the administrators to break even within 12 months, it seems football at the Wessex Stadium will continue.  Former Cambridge United chairman George Rolls had also

Football Conference Takes TV Hit as ESPN Pull-out

Talks between the Conference and American sports broadcaster EPSN have collapsed at the last minute. The Walt Disney network abandoned talks last week hours before contracts were due to be signed. It is understood that ESPN became concerned about the full production costs of the 25 matches they had planned to show. ESPN said in a statement that 'we decided it did not make business sense for us to show the league on the channel at this time.' It is unlikely that the decision will jeopardise the renewal of Blue Square's sponsorship of the league.

Cheshire Conference Clubs In Trouble

Chester City, relegated from the Football League last year, face a crunch board meeting tomorrow. With the season starting next Saturday, the club lack a licence to play. What's more the High Court revoked their Company Voluntary Arrangement that allow them to exit administration. The FA have to decide if they will grant Chester mandatory affiliation even though they are in clear breach of insolvency rules. The club have already paid out quarter of a million pounds in wages over the summer and badly need some cash flow.

Conference TV Rights For Sale

The Blue Square Premiership is confident about selling its television rights after the collapse of its five year £12m deal with Setanta, although whether it will raise as much money remains to be seen. Martin James of Sport 360, the Conference's official advertising agency, commented, 'We're not talking Top-Up TV or anything like that.' A free to air bidder is a possibility.

Mixed Fortunes For Non-league Clubs

Salisbury City, up for sale for £1, will meet two more prospective buyers in the next few days after already holding talks with prospective owners. A consortium of local businessmen and a stand-alone buyer have already held talks with the Conference club. Another potential buyer from Denmark is interested in the club, while there is also a second consortium in the wings. However, a quick sale is not expected.

Team Bath Quit

The college sports team is a standard feature of American life and is particularly important in sports such as American football and basketball. So it was no surprise that when an American vice-chancellor arrived at Bath University, he decided to set up a soccer team called Team Bath. Originally they played on the campus but more recently they have played at Bath City's ground at Twerton Park. They are currently mid-table in the Conference South but have decided to resign at the end of the season and return to university football.

Anyone Want To Buy a Conference Club For £1?

Is there anyone interested in buying a debt free, mid-table Conference club for £1? If you are, then get in touch with Salisbury City, although you would have to dig deep into your pockets to subsidise the team. The current directors will relinquish control next month. Chairman Neville Beal commented, 'We couldn't dig any deeper. We have put a lot of money, but clubs at this [Blue Square Premier] level need a bit more.' Earlier this season sponsors and supporters tried to raise £100,000 to underwrite wages, but only managed to raise £35,000.

Lower Level Troubles | Merthyr Tydfil FC and Bromsgrove Rovers

I was rung by a leading national newspaper today about the financial problems League 1 and League 2 clubs. There are fears that as many as six could go into administration in the next few weeks. That may be an exaggerated forecast, but the credit crunch has hit the local businesses that support clubs at that level. The answer in terms of a strategy is to have a lean and mean financial model that takes account of what is possible. Darlington got themselves into trouble by building a stadium that was far too big for their potential support.
