Futebol Clube do Porto was founded in 1893 by wine-salesman António Nicolau de Almeida, who had come into contact with the game duiring a trip to England. The club has won the Portuguese Liga 24 times, the Portuguese Cup 18 times, two European Cups and one UEFA Cup. Home matches are played at the Estádio do Dragão (capacity: 50,400) but the club also encompasses a range of other sports which are to be housed at a new multi-sport arena close to the stadium due to be completed by 2010.

Sporting Clube de Portugal - Sociedade Desportiva de Futebol, SAD, founded in 1906, is a general sports club based in Lisbon with more than 97,000 registered club members, although the football 'department' is clearly dominant across all of the sports disciplines in terms of budget and popularity. The club has won the Portuguese Liga 18 times, the Portuguese Cup 19 times and 1 European Cup Winners' Cup. Home matches are played at the Estádio José Alvalade (capacity: 50,080). The company (SAD) was admitted into the Portuguese Stock Exchange in 1998.

Top Portuguese Clubs by Average Attendance - 2005-06-2008-09

FC Porto headed the list of top football clubs in Portugal, as ranked by average number of spectators at domestic league matches. The Portuguese Liga (sponsored by Sagres in 2008/09) is the top division of Portuguese professional football. Next division down is the Liga de Honra. The Liga is contested by sixteen clubs each season and is currently in its 74th edition (2009/10).

The competition is dominated by the so called "big three" - Benfica, FC Porto and Sporting, who had a total of 71 titles between them up to end 2009, with Belenenses and Boavista winning the other two.
