A-League Set To Expand

14/03/2008

Australia's A-league is set to expand beyond ten teams in 2009. Gold Coast Galaxy and a Townsville-based consortium narrowly missed out on inclusion for the fourth season in 2008-9. However, they are by no means certain to be included in season five. Football Federation Australia chief executive Ben Buckley revealed that rival consortia could apply for licenses. Buckley said FFA favoured immediate expansion, but both applicant clubs had lingering issues such as finances and stadium arrangements, and would have faced a serious race against the clock to be competitive. 'We just don't think that the two teams are ready to go in season four and they'll benefit both on and off the field from a longer lead in,' Buckley said.
