G-14 is Dissolved

19/01/2008

The controversial association of top European clubs, G-14, has been dissolved and it is to be replaced by a new and larger clubs' organisation backed by Uefa. While this may be seen as a victory for Uefa, which has never liked the top clubs' organisation, Uefa has had to make concessions to secure the deal. However, some impetus was undoubtedly given by the fact that recent EU policy has seemed to back Uefa rather than G-14, while Uefa has taken a more conciliatory line under its new leadership. Clubs will, however, in future be compensated when their players play for national teams, a key G-14 demand, although how the amount of compensation is to be arrived at is still to be agreed. In return G-14 will drop all legal actions against Fifa and Uefa, including the Oulmers case. The deal also effectively ends any prospect of a breakaway European super league which has been the subject of speculation for many years. The new clubs' organisation will have at least one representative from each of Uefa's 53 member countries and hence will be much less exclusive than G-14.
