Worcester City Plan New Stadium - 08/10/2007 |

Given its size and relative prosperity - it is home of the famous 'Worcester Woman' median voter - it is perhaps surprising that Worcester does not support a conference or even a Football League club. Presumably some fans travel into the West Midlands conurbation to support clubs there. Blue Square North side Worcester City are now planning to move away from their vintage but somewhat dilapidated ground at St.George's Lane in a bid to get into the Football League. They have unveiled plans for a new £8m stadium which should be open in time for the 2009-10 season. Chairman Dave Boddy believes the extra revenue from the 6,000 capacity stadium will help the club climb up the leagues. 'We are hoping a move to a new stadium will increase the money coming so we can invest in the playing side,' said Boddy. Of course, first they have to fill it up and over ambitious stadium projects have been the undoing of many clubs, note Coventry's current troubles. The planned stadium will be built next to junction 7 of the M5 after the club forged a partnership with St Modwen - the company who built Stoke City's Britannia stadium. |
