Bid Reported For Birmingham

10/06/2007

Birmingham City could become the eighth foreign owned club in the Premiership (counting Sunderland's Irish owners). Reports suggest that the club's owners have agreed to sell out in a £70m deal to a Far East-based businessman. Due diligence is expected to take place this week. The club insisted on seeing proof of funds from the buyer and have already called an emergency board meeting for Monday. They then issued a statement via the Stock Exchange confirming that they were the subject of a bid. Co-owner David Sullivan had said that he could not comment and any announcement would be made through the Stock Exchange. The owners have taken a united decision to sell because the buyer is paying well over market value for the promoted club. While Sullivan has always been willing to consider selling up, the Gold brothers have always said they wanted to stay. The other Premiership club in Birmingham, Aston Villa, is American owned.
