Scarborough are set to go into liquidation on Tuesday, to be replaced by a new club four steps lower down the non-league pyramid in the Northern Counties East League. Hopes of saving the 128-year old club by paying off their debts of more than £2m appeared all but dead after the local council decided not to lift covenants on the McCain Stadium which would allow it to be sold for redevelopment. If the plan had been approved, the proceeds of £4m would not only have paid off the club's debts but allowed a new ground to be built. On Tuesday, a formal application will be made in the High Court for the Seadogs to be wound up, after a company voluntary arrangement failed in April. So just three years after entertaining Chelsea at the McCain Stadium in an FA Cup fourth round clash at the McCain Stadium, John Terry scoring the only goal of the game, the Seadogs are contemplating a ground share at Bridlington Town and home games against the likes of Worsborough Bridge and Rossington Main. Although Scarborough survived 12 years in the Football League, it was perhaps a step too far for a town that could have comfortably supported a Conference club. Aldershot and Newport County were also forced to reform at non-league level. Both are still in the non-league, although Conference side Aldershot has been the more successful of the two.
