League Clubs Try To Cut Out Agents

27/07/2007

Football League clubs spent £8.6m on agents in 2006/7 compared with £7.7m in 2005/6, but during the past six months spending has been cut by 25 per cent. Colchester United were the only Championship club not to pay agents, but they ended up two places above Crystal Palace who paid out more than £430,000. However, the three biggest spenders were the promoted teams: Sunderland (£881,994); Birmingham (£841,150); Derby (£638,946). Five League 1 clubs and thirteen League 2 clubs spent nothing on agents' fees. Of course, agents make their real money in the Premiership, but the top flight does not disclose how much clubs have paid out.
