Seagulls Get Stadium Go Ahead

24/07/2007

Brighton and Hove Albion have been given approval to build a new 22,000-seater stadium in Falmer on the outskirts of the south coast city. Communities and Local Government minister Hazel Blears gave approval. The League One side, who currently play at the Withdean Stadium, have been without a permanent home since they left the Goldstone Ground in 1997. However, fans are not opening the champagne yet. One of the opponents of the scheme, Falmer Parish Council, said lawyers would be examining the decision to see if an appeal could be made, while Lewes Council will make a decision in the next ten days. Supporters formed The Seagull Party in 2006 to field candidates at local elections in response to the Lib Dem opposition in Lewes. But local Lib Dem MP Norman Lewes conceded 'the time has come to accept the final whistle on this issue.'
