Police Raid Three Clubs In Corruption Probe

17/07/2007

The Economic Crime Unit of the City of London Police has raided three football clubs as part of an investigation into alleged corruption in football. Newcastle United and Rangers FC are believed to have been raided and the third club may be Portsmouth. The City of London police have been at pains to stress that the operation is not connected to Lord Stevens' ongoing Quest inquiry into the Premiership and was 'totally independent'. It would nevertheless be interesting to know if the two investigations had any information that overlapped. Search warrants were executed on the club premises and the homes of two individuals 'in connection with corruption in football and its impact on owners and shareholders'.
