Saints Bid Rumoured

13/07/2007

Reports have claimed that the state owned Dubai International Capital, the overseas investment arm of Dubai Holdings, have been holding talks about a possible takeover with Southampton. DIC, who bought the Tussaud's Group last year for £800m, are believed to be keen to extend their portfolio of leisure assets and have previously been involved in a takeover bid at Liverpool. Saints' share price closed yesterday at 58.75p, giving the club a current Stock Market value of £16.5m. In addition, the club's overall debt remains at over the £20m mark, mainly due to their mortgage on the St.Mary's stadium. DIC have a policy of not commenting on market or press rumours, while reports from sources close to Southampton suggest that reports that talks are 'advanced' are 'wide of the mark' - which does not mean that they are not taking place. With their prosperous catchment area and Premiership potential, Southampton could be an attractive acquisition and it is not the first time they have been the subject of takeover speculation this year.
