70,000 Internet Viewers for Sevilla vs Steaua Bucharest - 17/02/2007

The UEFA Cup match between Steaua Bucharest and Seville (0-2 in favour of the Spanish) on Thursday 15th February marked the first time in Spain an entire football match could be followed totally live and free through Internet, mobile telephone and television. An estimated 1,400,000 people watched the game of which around 70,000 people chose to view by Internet, through laSexta.com and elmundo.es, (40,000 people through elmundo.es and 30,000, by lasexta.com). The game was transmitted with a broadband resolution quality superior to 300 kbps. Another 9,046 subscribers of Orange viewed the game by telephone.

Transmission over the different television systems (analogue, digital terrestrial, cable and digital platform), was through La Sexta TV channel. An average of 955,000 spectators followed it this way.

The new service from elmundo.es also provides videos with summaries of five minutes of each game in the Primera Liga, a 5 minute daily show with latest gossip and news and a 'best goals' round-up covering Primera, First Division and Copa Del Rey matches. La Sexta, which is the new kid on the block in Spanish broadcasting, has invested heavily in sports programming from day one of its launch and also shows regular coverage of the German Bundesliga.
