American Soccer Boss Could Save Cambridge United

05/02/2007

The boss of the Seattle Sounders soccer team (an ex-United Soccer League now an expansion MSL side - *update - December 2008*) is one of a trio who is prepared to put £600,000 into ailing Conference side Cambridge United. But the offer by current directors Paul Barry and Johnny Hon together with Seattle owner Adrian Hannauer has divided leading shareholders. They are opposed by a group of five former directors including John Howard who owns the club's Abbey Stadium. United expect to lose £350,000 in this financial year on top of the £200,000 rent they pay former director Howard. Barry believes that without fresh investment, United will have to go into administration, as they did in 2005. This would mean a ten point reduction and probable relegation to Nationwide South. The outcome all depends on a vote to reduce the value of the club's shares and to remove a rule limiting single holdings to 20 per cent of total share capital. Fans' trust Cambridge Fans United, the third largest shareholder, are expected to support the move so the key could be the fourth largest shareholder, ex-director Roger Hunt, who is considering his position.
