G-14 and Uefa Come Closer Together

05/12/2007

G-14, the organisation of top European clubs, appears to be close to a rapprochement with Uefa. The plan is to replace G-14 by a larger grouping of clubs that could ultimately lead to G-14 (which has eighteen members) closing down. The plan follows talks with Uefa and it is envisaged that the new group would elect club representatives to Uefa's new strategic committee, which Uefa president Michael Platini is setting up to bridge the gap between Uefa and the clubs, leagues and players. The original plan was to invite twenty new clubs to join the existing eighteen, but more may now be invited, although it is not clear what the membership criteria will be. The Commissions's White Paper on Sport published in July 2007 was relatively favourable to Uefa's perspective and called for a more structured dialogue with stakeholders. This may have encouraged the formation of the new organisation which follows a long period of hostile relations between Uefa and G-14.
