New Owner at Swindon Town FC

26/12/2007

After three previous failed attempts to purchase the Robins, a consortium headed by Andrew Fitton has finally secured control of the Robins (subject to resolving a few outstanding issues with Revenue and Customs). Two previous spells of administration, crippling debts and threats of winding up orders have plagued Swindon over the last ten years. However, Fitton is determined to stop the club being a financial laughing stock. Fitton said, 'There is an awful lot to do and we will attack the low-hanging fruit first of all. Then we will get onto the more difficult stuff like redeveloping the ground. Our objective is to turn this into one of the best-run and managed clubs in the country.' Fitton said that he had wanted to run a football club for twenty years before it was fashionable to do so. All he had to do now was to convince his wife of the sanity of his takeover. Swindon isn't a massive town, its environs are largely rural and up market and there are fast trains to London for the Premiership. As the town has expanded, a lot of people have come in with no local roots. So if Fitton can make Swindon a well-run club, he will have really achieved something.
