Swindon In Financial Trouble

11/12/2007

League 1 Swindon Town FC are in serious financial trouble. The club owes £2m to HM Revenue and Customs as well as £900,000 from a CVA in the summer. Takeover talks involving majority shareholder Sir Seton Wills, his son James and family advisor Mike Diamandis broke down last week. Prospective purchaser, businessman Andrew Fitton, said that the club would have to 'crawl back on their hands and knees' if his bid was to be resurrected. However, further talks have taken place, but the outcome may not be known until later this week. Some fans have expressed fears that the club, which enjoyed one season in the Premiership, could go out of business altogether. Swindon has fast and frequent rail links with London, making supporting a Premiership club relatively easy.
