Chances of West Ham Sale Boosted - 23/09/2006 |

The chances of West Ham being sold have been boosted by the news that secretive Israeli property magnate Eli Papoushado is willing to help fund the £100m takeover. He stated, 'This is to confirm that Mr Kia Joorabchian has spoken to me about leading a consortium of investors in football projects. After considerable thought, I have agreed to participate if Kia goes forward with any such project.' It had been thought that the Anglo-Iranian entrepreneur was struggling to find investors to fund the £70m he needs to buy the club and the £30m to clear its debts. Paopushado has previously shown little interest in football, but he may see opportunities linked with the Olympic Games and the possible move of West Ham to the Olympic Stadium which would free up the Boleyn Ground for development. Any takeover could raise questions about the future of manager Alan Pardew. He has already made it clear that he is concerned about the implications of any deal and has spoken publicly about the need to maintain the club's 'integrity' and heritage. There are also concerns that West Ham could be used to showcase South American football talent in Europe with the players then moved on to other clubs and reduced opportunities for the development of young British players. However, the chances of any deal going through are still rated only at fifty-fifty. |
