Oxford United Sold

23/03/2006

Oxford United were once a top division club owned by tycoon Robert Maxwell who lived at nearby Headington Hall. He planned to merge them with Reading in a club called Thames Valley Royals that would play out of a stadium in Didcot. In 2001 Firoz Kassam funded their move away from the Manor Ground in leafy Headington, a stadium that looked as if it had been built with a Mecanno set, to the three sided Kassam Stadium. Oxford have been languishing near the bottom of League Two and a week ago a thousand fans protested outside the stadium calling on Kassam to sell up. Now he has done just that, selling the club to a local consortium headed by Nick Merry and former manager Jim Smith. The deal is reported to be worth £2m. The consortium have only bought the club at this point but have reached a provisional agreement to buy the stadium in the summer.
