Mackems Deal In Trouble

19/06/2006

A £16m deal to take control of relegated Sunderland may be in danger of collapse. A deal between Bob Murray, long-term chairman of the Mackems and majority shareholder, and an Irish consortium fronted by former Sunderland player Niall Quinn seems to be in trouble. The Murray camp is said to be concerned about the deal going ahead even though due diligence has been completed. A meeting between the two sides is believed to be imminent given that the players start pre-season training tomorrow. Any more uncertainty after Sunderland's awful season in the Premiership could damage hopes of returning the club, which has something of a yo-yo reputation having been relegated four times from the top flight since 1990, to an even keel. The deal is believed to call for £14m to be paid up front with another £2m to be paid if the Weirside club regain their Premiership status. Even if they do, filling their 49,000 capacity stadium will still be a challenge.
