Rotherham Face Closure

10/02/2006

We've been here before with lower division clubs, but the survival of Rotherham is in real doubt. Administration is not an option because the club do not own their ground and have no real assets. They could cease trading within the next few weeks with chairman Peter Ruchniewicz saying that there is 'a very real possibility' that the club could go out of existence. The Millers are losing £140,000 a week and need to find £1 million to keep going until the end of the season and a further £1 million to achieve full viability for next season and beyond. The crisis has been brought about by a poor response to a recent rights issue, a reduction in income from season tickets, coupled with declining gate receipts and commercial income. The refusal of Southend to pay £125,000 for former Charlton player Jamal Campbell-Ryce was also a blow. Rotherham United Supporters' Trust chairman Craig Saunderson said, 'People say we are shadowed by the two Sheffield clubs but there's 250,000 people in Rotherham and if we can't get a large percentage of those to come and support the football club then it doesn't deserve to be in existence.
