Racing Club Warwick Turn £30,000 Into £2,000,000

04/02/2005

It sounds like a loaves and fishes miracle, but it has been achieved by Midland Alliance club Racing Club Warwick whose attendance does not always reach three figures. By putting up £30,000 of their own money they have come up with £2 million to refurbish their delapidated ground. Admittedly, it needs it with the poor pitch allegedly been used to graze horses between matches. £1.17m has been pledged by the Government's Future Builders group, a fine New Labour phrase if one ever heard one. I found them on the Treasury web site and apparently they have a lot of dosh for community and voluntary sector projects. Warwick District Council, just about to hike their council tax by nearly five per cent, came up with £350,000. The balance came in the form of a 'substantial sum' from the FA-backed Football Foundation. Hey presto! The club will have a new clubhouse, a new playing surface, a gym and a double decker stand. Unfortunately, it's unlikely to be filled except for the derby match against Leamington.
