There could be even more competition for contracts to show football on television in the future with BT moving into the market for their new service BT Vision for which they have a target of 3 million customers by 2010. The telecommunications giant has unveiled a deal with Irish pay television broadcaster Setanta Sports to show live matches on its new service. BT is to show 46 live Premiership television matches as part of the deal. Setanta had already announced plans to make premiership matches available through Freeview on a subscription basis. However, BT said that Vision customers - who will be able to watch the Setanta matches from next summer - would receive a better-value package because of its special tie-up. Most interesting of all, BT has raised the prospect of bidding with Setanta in future auctions for live Premiership rights.
