Ellis May Go At Last

27/06/2005

Aston Villa boss Doug Ellis may be a few weeks away from accepting a bid for the club. At the moment the 81-year old majority shareholder is recovering from triple heart bypass surgery. But once he is feeling better he may accept an improved £45m offer from Ray Ranson, the former Manchester City player, and his consortium. Ranson made an initial offer of £30m which was too little given that property opportunities tied up with the club make its total value nearer £40m. Villa's other influential voice, Jack Petchey, who owns a 20 per cent stake in the club (Ellis holds 33 per cent) would also approve a deal as he wants to realise his capital. More comatose giant than sleeping giant, things may be about to change at a club that has considerable potential given its ground and catchment area.
