Liverpool are in danger of becoming a footballing relic according to former captain and television pundit Alan Hansen. He urged the Reds to accept former Redrow Homes tycoon Steve Morgan's money if they want to challenge the elite again. Hansen commented in a radio interview, 'The last thing you want as a Liverpool fan is to be submerged in mediocrity.' He continued, 'We're not a relic yet, but we're nearer to it now than we were 15 years ago, and that's the danger to me.' The former Scottish international defender noted, 'It always used to be "first is first and the rest is nowhere." That sort of thinking is not there now.' Indeed, it has been observed that for Liverpool, fourth is the new first. It is interesting that Hansen's intervention came after alternative bidder Robert Kraft gave an interview to the Financial Times at thirty minutes notice for publication in their weekend edition. As well as successfully transforming the New England Patriots American football franchise, the 64-year old tycoon owns the New England Revolution soccer team coached by former Liverpool player Steve Nicol. Kraft refused to discuss Liverpool, but confirmed that he was interested in adding 'other franchises globally' to his portfolio. In an effort to reassure fans of the Liverpool franchise, Kraft denied that he is a corporate raider concerned only with the bottom line. He said, 'When we get involved in a team, we do it to win, not to make money.' Winning is certainly something that would come in handy at Anfield at the moment. Fans may prefer a home grown fan like Morgan, but American money may well win the day.
