Chelsea Have 3 Million 'Fans' In The UK

21/02/2005

Three million people in the UK should be crying in their breakfast cereals this morning after Chelsea's exit from the FA Cup at the hands of Newcastle United if we are to believe a survey by SPORT+MARKT, the German based communications research company. Those surveyed were between 15 and 69 with an interest in televised football, aka the couch potato brigade. Chelsea's followers have doubled in six months from 1.5m to 3m. Mind you, if only one per cent of them bought some Chelsea merchandise so that they were kitted up in front of the tv, it would be a nice little earner for the club. However, Chelsea's 'fan' base still lags behind that of Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United. Chelsea are only the ninth most popular club in Europe. Real Madrid lead the table with 40 million followers and United are second with 19 million, closely followed by Barcelona and Arsenal.
