Arsenal Pin Hopes On New Stadium

21/08/2004

Arsenal expect to receive about £50m more in income each season when they move to the Emirates stadium next season. At the topping out ceremony last week, Arsene Wenger said, 'The project was vital because it was that or we would die on a longer term at the top level.' Arsenal must average crowds of about 55,000 in the 60,000 capacity stadium to fund the annual repayments of about £18m. Once in their new stadium, the club intend to finance the £260m loan they have taken out for a much longer period than the 14 years agreed last year. The club are set to receive as much as an extra £20m from the redevelopment of Highbury after securing planning permission for an additional 154 flats to be built on the site raising the value of the project from £80m to £100m. The move to Ashburton Grove has not been without its problems and Danny Fiszman, a director leading the project admitted that, with the benefit of foresight, they would have chosen a new venue outside Islington.
